Yoga helped me concentrate on the test a lot. The one that really helped me concentrate was tree pose.

How to Include Hip-HopYoga into PE Classes

Q "How can I incorporate Hip-HopYoga™ into my PE classes during the school day? " - Question submitted by a Physical Education Teacher in Indiana

A Hip-HopYoga™ is a program that fuses yoga and dance moves into a fluid performance piece and is a great activity to use during PE class. Typically, a Mindful Practices instructor will visit a school that wishes to bring Hip-HopYoga™ to their students and provides an in-depth professional development instructional training session. However, if funding or time are not available, below are a few quick first steps to implement Hip-HopYoga™ in PE classes:

Incorporate Simple Dance Moves into Warm-up Activities

Begin to incorporate simple dance moves into your warm-up activities. Nothing fancy or elaborate, a simple step-step-hop, step-step-hop will work just fine.

Put the Students in Charge of Choregraphy

'Assign' dance moves to your students for homework. It does NOT matter if you, the teacher, cannot dance. Simply ask the students to bring in their favorite (appropriate) moves in for homework. Start off with an eight count limit and see what cool moves the students create. (Be sure to let the students explore their creativity in a constructive manner)

Combine Choregraphy with Yoga Poses

Link yoga poses to dance moves as if writing a sentence. Tree, 2, 3, 4 into Warrior Two, 2, 3, 4 then step, step, hop, etc. Set this simple routine to current music or Hip-Hop tracks. (Be mindful that the music is free of inappropriate language!)

The tips mentioned aboved are a great introduction to incorporating Hip-HopYoga™ into daily PE classes. To get more in-depth training on Hip-HopYoga™,contact Carla Tantillo. Mindful Practices provides Hip-HopYoga™ professional development and after school programming.
